Nicholson Institute - Leek
Some of William Morris’ most famous chintz designs, including ‘Pomegranate’ and ‘Honeysuckle’, were printed first in Leek by ‘Wardle and Co’. Inspired by the ideals of Morris, William and Larner Sugden designed this civic building to house an art college, library, picture gallery, museum and music and lecture rooms.
The Practice was appointed for the site construction phase of repairs to the roofs, including the ornate copper cupola. This had been originally detailed as if for lead, and failure of its fixings had allowed water penetration and decay. The renewed roof is now detailed in accordance with Copper Development Association recommendations.
High level masonry was also repaired and stabilised, clerestory lights renewed and high level glazing re-instated. The Practice additionally reported on accessibility.
